About

Luminosity was established in 2011 under the creative direction of award-winning lighting designer Claire Norcross. Best known for her work while head of lighting at Habitat, her designs include Eight-Fifty, Aperture, Spindle and Ribbon; which received the ‘Best in Lighting’ award from Elle Decoration magazine.

“‘Design Classic’ is an over-used phrase in this industry, but I expect it to be associated with the work of Claire Norcross for a long time to come.”
Sir Terence Conran

Claire has teamed up with Rob Payne, who brings with him a wealth of knowledge from his background in finance and importing.

Having been in business for little more than a year, Luminosity has already got off to a flying start, stocking major retailers such as John Lewis, as well as a number of independent design retailers. See our stockists page for more details.

Inspiration

Claire Norcross has always taken personal inspiration for her designs from sculptural forms found in the natural world, whether that be sea anemones, plant stems or the super-scaling of nature to contain light. Her inspiration is then translated into the appropriate medium, whether that be paper, metal or glass.

The iconic Aperture light was inspired by the nature of a pine cone and its ability to open and close according to the weather conditions. The new Banksia shades were inspired by a trip to Australia and the more unusual pine cones of the Banksia tree. Yet the inspiration for the form of the Rosa light was found closer to home and derived from experiments to create a graphic representation of a traditional English rose.

While the products themselves are mass produced, they originate from a design process firmly rooted in the hand crafting of the material. Claire Norcross has an instinctive approach to structure and has adapted the traditional craft techniques and manipulated the geodesic forms, to produce this versatile collection of contemporary shades.
